Before we proceed, because this study is very important,
it is recommended that you be comfortable with the bible version being used.
Of the versions we support, the King James Version is the best one to use for the study of Daniel 11.
The KJV does a translation only, while the others attempt to do some interpreting along with translation.
This is not really possible on the book of Daniel, especially chapter 11, because it was a sealed book until "the time of the end".
It has only been in very recent times that Daniel 11 has been understood.
Hovever, if you would prefer to use a version other than the King James Version,
go to the top of this page and select one you trust.

Of all the prophetic books, Daniel was the one that was Sealed till the time of the end.
And of all the chapters of Daniel that stayed sealed the longest, Daniel 11 is the one.
The book of Daniel gives one prophecy, but gives it four times, in increasing detail. Half a chapter in Daniel 2. A whole chapter in Daniel 7. Two chapters in Daniel 8 & 9. And then 3 chapters in Daniel 10-12
This makes the interpretation of Daniel 11, which holds the most complicated portion, a little easier, because we know the general trend of the prophecy from the three preceding occurrences.
This means, if we are interpreting the prophecy correctly, then we should pass and recogise each point seen in preceding prophecies.
The prophecy that we are referring to as Daniel 11 is really documented over the chapters 10,11,12. However, If we cover all three chapters in depth, it will be a much longer study, so we will limit ourselves to the actual prophecy which starts in chapter 10 verse 20 and ends in chapter 12. One thing we must keep in mind with awe, is that this chapter was written long before ANY of the events it predicts. It was written in "the first year of Darius the Mede" which makes it 522BC, and the events it predicts run through to OUR time and right up to the second coming of Jesus, and even beyond that. This makes it a very far reaching prophecy indeed.

The King of the North and the King of the South.

One thing that confuses a lot of people about Daniel 11 is the frequent reference to the king of the north or the king of the south. These titles "change hats" as history progresses. The title "King of the North" does not always refer to the same entity, and neither does the "King of the South". One has to take note of the time to which the particular text refers to to be able to recognise the current terminology of either title.
There are a few simple rules to help you determine what they mean.

Term
Literal
Before the cross
(Type)
Spiritual
After the cross
(Antitype)
King of the North
Kingdom north of Jerusalem
The book of Daniel sees Imperial Rome and Papal Rome as one unit, one of both church and state.
Daniel 2 sees it as iron from the legs melding into iron and clay.
Daniel 7 sees it as the head of the dragon beast morphing into the little horn.
Daniel 8 sees it as the horn of the goat having an earthward phase changing into a spiritual phase.
Daniel 11 sees it as the king of the north in its last phase.
So, once the king of the north becomes Rome, it stays as such in both its phases.
King of the south
Kingdom south of Jerusalem
always Egypt
Spiritual Egypt, which is Secular athiesm Revelation 11:8

When considering prophecy, be aware that it is always based around and relavent to God's people. To this end, any prophecy before the cross is based around God's people, the Jews located in Israel, and any prophecy after the cross is also based around God's people, taking into account the fact the Jesus made the statement "your house is left unto you desolate" Matthew 23:38 so now "God's people" refers to Christians located all over the world. This has been a source of criticism of the Bible in many ways. For instance, many have scoffed that the Bible never mentions China. The reason for this is that China has never had any sphere of influence over God's people. The same scoffers completely miss the mention of the USA, which has had enormous effect on the Christian world, in Bible prophecy

Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia:  This vision was occuring during the reign of the Persian empire. God had said in Daniel 9 that the 2300 day prophecy would start with the "going forth of the decree to rebuild and restore Jerusalem" and satan was doing all in his power to prevent that decree from happening. Gabriel had been sent to fight for the mind of the prince of Persia, to prevent satan from influencing the timing decree. The timing of this decree was of major importance because it marked the start date of the 2300 day prophecy and satan was doing all in his power to delay or stop it.

and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come.  This battle between Gabriel the angel and satan (also referred to as the prince of Persia symbolically) would go on for quite some time. In the mean time the angels were holding back the strife between Persia and Greece because the failed attempt by Persia to overthrow Greece has been attributed by historians as the reason for the depletion of the funds of the Persian empire. Had these funds been depleted earlier, it would have been another reason for satan to sway the Persian leader to avoid funding the rebuilding of Jerusalem.

Also I in the first year of Darius the Mede, even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen him.

The angels were giving strength to the Medo/Persians to keep them in power.
As Daniel said in chapter 2, it is God that sets up and removes kings. Daniel 2:21

And now will I shew thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia;

To avoid confusion here, please note that the currently ruling system was a coalition government. The Medes, whose current head is Darius (The Mede) in his first year, and the stronger Persians, whose current leader is Cyrus in his third year. Darius is the current king over the coalition, but the remaining coalition kings would all be Persian.
Gabriel is referring to the next three Persian kings to follow Cyrus, who would also be coalition kings.
These were:-
Cambyses (son of Cyrus)525BC to 522BC
Gaumata (also known as Bardiya)522BC to 522BC
Yep - 7 months
Darius I The Persian,
as opposed to Darius the Mede
who was currently ruling.
522BC to 486BC

and the fourth shall be far richer than they all:  Xerses (referred to in the Bible as Ahasuerus) would follow these and be more wealthy than any of the previous three.
His wealth was probably provided by God to give him the ability to fund the rebuilding of Jerusalem.

and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia.  Unfortunately, he used his wealth to stir up a fight against Greece. He did manage to keep them in check, but this failed attempt to overthrow Greece would eventually be a thorn in the side of Persia.

And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will.

As the next verse will confirm, this is Alexander the Great, who overthrew Medo-Persia in 331BC.

And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven;

Does this text remind you of the goat that had a "a notable horn between his eyes" Daniel 8:5 of Daniel 8 that was broken and replaced by 4 lesser ones? Daniel 8:22
It should. This is the same power. It is Alexander the Great, succeeded by his 4 generals, who divided the kingdom into 4 parts. It is also the same power as the leopard with 4 heads in Daniel 7.

and not to his posterity,  This kingdom did not fall to an heir or family member, as he had none. It went to his 4 generals.
nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up,  His kingdom did not stay in one piece, it was divided into 4 pieces.

even for others beside those.  His kingdom went to others.

The english of verse 5 is a little awkward, probably because it is old english origin. However, it can still be clearly understood. We will look at it piece by piece to simplify this.

And the king of the south shall be strong,

Refers to Ptolemy, who took over Egypt which is south of Jerusalem.

and one of his princes;  The "his" refers to Alexander, not Ptolomy. It points to one of Alexander's generals, namely Seleucus

and he shall be strong above him,  The "he" here refers to the last entity mentioned, "one of his princes" ,
Seleucus, who initially placed himself under the control of Ptolemy, but later became much greater, by overpowering the other two divisions, namely Cassander and Lysimachus, thereby controlling three quarters of the divided empire.

and have dominion; his dominion shall be a great dominion.  The Seleucid kingdom grew to a great one.

The king of the south throughout this chapter refers to Egypt, firstly literal Egypt, and then spiritual/symbolic Egypt. Literal Egypt is obvious, because it was located south of Jerusalem. In the spiritual/symbolic phase after the crucifiction of Jesus, it refers to secularistic athiesm. The Pharaoh was the one who made the first notable athiestic declaration when he said "Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD," Exodus 5:2
Incidentally, the King of the North in all it's "hats", has a belief system, but not Christian, so the King of the North represents false religion, while the King of the South represents athiesm.

The map of the kingdoms after the division of Alexander's dominion is shown in the map below.
This map becomes very important when examining the prophecies of the King of the North and the King of the South. .
To help those with tired eyes, the colours of the divisions are:-
Kingdom of Cassander
Kingdom of Lysimachus
Kingdom of Seleucus
Kingdom of Ptolemy
Marker for Jerusalem

At this point I should mention, if you have not already realised it, Jerusalem and Israel also become spiritual/symbolic after the cross. Before the cross, all the examples/stories are the type of things to come and after the cross these transition to antitype.

And in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for the king's daughter of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement:

The grandson of Seleucus, Antiochus II, king of the north, married Berenice, the daughter of Ptolemy II, king of the south (Egypt) in 249BC. Maybe this is where Queen Victoria got the idea? It did not work for long however.

but she shall not retain the power of the arm;  Antiochus II left Berenice after 12 months and the birth of their son, and went back to his first wife Laodice. This had the opposite effect on relations between the two kings, friction instead of bonding.

neither shall he stand, nor his arm: but she shall be given up,   More and more pressue was brought on Antiochus II, by Ptolemy, to return to Berenice. Laodice thought she would prevent this by poisoning Antiochus II, having Berenice's son murdered and Berenice executed.

and they that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthened her in these times.   All the Egyptian princesses that accompanied her were murdered with her.
Berenice's father Ptolemy II had greatly supported her. He even sent her bottled water from the Nile so she never had to drink water from any other source.

But out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate, which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and shall deal against them, and shall prevail:

Ptolemy III Euergetes
Lived 280BC - 222BC
Reigned 246BC - 222BC
He (Ptolemy II) died, and was replaced by Ptolemy III, Berenice's brother, who was so enraged at the death of his sister, that he started the "Third Syrian War" (246–241BC) and savagely ravaged a lot of Seleucid territory and plundered it heavily. During this time, Laodice, who had murdered Berenice, was executed and Seleucus II, brother of Antiochus II, was exiled.

And shall also carry captives into Egypt their gods, with their princes, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold;

He even brought back to Egypt many religious idols and treasures that were taken by Persian king Cambyses 300 years earlier.
His booty included 40,000 talents of silver (1 talent=57lb), 2500 images of Egyptian gods, and countless precious vessels.

and he shall continue more years than the king of the north.  Of these two definitions of the King of the North and the King of the South , the King of the South will last longer, and we will see later in this study that that is what played out. Rome overthrew the Seleucids (King of the North) before they overtook the Ptolemies, thus, at that point, making Rome the new king of the North. But not yet. We are still dealing with the remnants of Greece.
Also Ptolemy III lived about 5 years longer than Seleucus II, but I think this is not what the prophecy is referring to.

So the king of the south shall come into his kingdom, and shall return into his own land.

Ptolemy III would have advanced further against the king of the north, but domestic issues back in Egypt forced him to halt his campaign, so he returned to Egypt with his plunder and all was well for a little while.

But his sons shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a multitude of great forces: and one shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass through: then shall he return, and be stirred up, even to his fortress.

And all was well until Ptolemy IV took over from Ptolemy III, and the feud started again.
The " his sons " here refers to the sons of the king of the north, Seleucus III and Antiochus III. They assembled a massive army of 62000 infantry and 6000 horsemen.

And the king of the south shall be moved with choler, and shall come forth and fight with him, even with the king of the north:

Ptolemy IV
Lived 244BC - 204BC
Reigned 221BC - 204BC
Antiochus III
Lived 241BC - 187BC
Reigned 222BC - 187BC
Ptolemy IV (King of the South) met Antiochus III (King of the North) at the battle of Raphia in 217BC.

and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand.  Antiochus III enlisted the aid of Theodotus from Aetolia on the Greek mainland (A great multitude) but that did not help him. History shows that, in just that one battle, Antiochus III (King of the North) lost 10,000 men and Ptolemy IV (King of the South) lost 1500.

And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heart shall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but he shall not be strengthened by it.

Ptolemy IV pushed Antiochus III back where he came from with a convincing victory, but his success was short lived.
At this time, Ptolemy suffered internal civil conflict led by local Egyptians that had helped him against Antiochus. They founded another kingdom called "Upper Egypt", which only lasted 20 years, but took Ptolemy's attention and funds, keeping him from concentrating on finishing off Antiochus.

For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches.

It was only 16 years later, after a truce between the two nations, that Antiochus III came back with a mighty army and defeated the son of Ptolemy IV, Ptolemy V, at the battle of Panium in 200BC

And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south:

Ptolemy V was only 5 years old, and the administrator ruling for him (Agathocles) was causing internal problems everywhere. This caused many provinces to rebel ( "many shall stand" ) and bring about the execution of Agathocles along with his family and associates.
Further to this, Philip of Macedon formed a confederacy with Antiochus III.
The Jews stood with Ptolemy V against Antiochus III, but they backed the wrong side.

also the robbers of thy people shall exalt themselves to establish the vision; but they shall fall.  This is a reference to the Republic of Rome, which was rising at that time, but not strong enough yet.
They intervened in the conflict to come to the aid of the infant Ptolemy V, but were unsuccessful.

So the king of the north shall come,

Antiochus III came back again

and cast up a mount, and take the most fenced cities:  He used mounds and ramps combined with battering rams to demolish the walls of the high fenced cities.

and the arms of the south shall not withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand.  He completely overpowered Ptolemy, but did not press into Egypt. He took back Coele-Syria which included Jerusalem.
Coele-Syria

But he that cometh against him shall do according to his own will,

Enter Rome. Take note of verse 15, which describes the defeat of the king of the south by the king of the north. Going into verse 16, the emphasis is on the king of the north, and the phrase But he that cometh against him refers to whom? It is a different power to the king of the north because it is against him and it is not the king of the south, because he has just had his butt kicked. It is the Romans, and the next couple of verses confirm it. Of course, at this point Rome becomes the new king of the north.

and none shall stand before him:
The Roman beast from Daniel 7
The iron monachy of Rome trampled everything.

and he shall stand in the glorious land, which by his hand shall be consumed.  Rome occupied Jerusalem in 63BC and put a governor in charge.

He shall also set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom, and upright ones with him; thus shall he do:

Until this time, the power had been divided into 4 kingdoms since the death of Alexander the Great. Rome overtook all, and turned it back into one complete kingdom, including the land of Judea.
The Jews ( the upright ones ), led by Antipater, fought on the side of the Romans.

and he shall give him the daughter of women, corrupting her:
Julius Caesar
Lived 100BC - 44BC
Reigned 46BC – 44BC
Ptolemy XI had two children:- Cleopatra and Ptolemy XII. When he died in 51BC, he placed them under the guardianship of the Romans. Cleopatra became the mistress of Julius Caesar, having an illegitimate child to him. (corrupting her)

but she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him.
Cleopatra
69BC - 30BC
but she did not stand at his side. They were both married to others, so never married. Also, Cleopatra saw it as an affair of convenience. Her interests were not that of Rome, but for her own Egyptian kingdom. Julius Caesar was instrumental in aiding her against her brother whom she shared power with. He (the brother) was murdered in 47BC, and we can only guess who was instrumental in that.

After this shall he turn his face unto the isles, and shall take many:

Julius Caesar conquored all the islands in the Mediterranean Sea. So much so, that the Romans referred to the Mediterranean as "our sea" . And rightly so, as they ruled all the land around the Mediterranean, and all that was in it. After this, he sent a message to his friends Veni, Vidi, Vici meaning "I came, I saw, I conquered".

but a prince for his own behalf
Mark Antony
83BC - 30BC
This was Mark Antony, who looked after Julius Caesar's political interests while he was away on military conquests.

shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; without his own reproach he shall cause it to turn upon him.  The many criticisms that were directed at Julius at this time fell on Mark Antony who was in the line of fire. Therefore he caused the reproach to turn upon himself .

Then he shall turn his face toward the fort of his own land: but he shall stumble and fall, and not be found.

When Caesar returned to Rome, his assassination was performed at the senate. More than 60 senators conspired to assassinate him, including a close friend, Marcus Brutus. What they did was the ultimate form a "no confidence vote" by inflicting 23 knife wounds.
Mark Antony then caused the reproach offered by him to cease by hunting down the assassins. The battles that followed resulted in both Brutus and Cassius committing suicide in 42BC.

Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle.

Augustus Caesar
Lived 63BC - 14AD
Reigned 27BC - 14AD
Julius Caesar was succeeded by Augustus Caesar, real name Gaius Octavius, who adopted the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus. He decided that the whole world should be taxed. This is referred to in the book of Luke. Luke 2:1
He was the Roman leader at the time Jesus was born. History says that the Roman empire was at it's brightest and best ( in the glory of the kingdom ) in the Augustan era and he died peacfully in bed at age 75 in 14AD.

And in his estate shall stand up a vile person,

Tiberius Caesar
Lived 42BC - 37AD
Reigned 14AD - 37AD
Tiberius Caesar was the son of the wife of Augustus and was a vile person. Augustus bypassed him and gave the nomination to Agrippa despite his wife's request.

to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom:  The citizens of the kingdom had no respect for Tiberius and therefore they shall not give the honour of the kingdom.

but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.   While Augustus was still in power, Agrippa died, and the wife of Augustus persuaded him into nominating Tiberius.
Thus he did not have to compete for the position ( he shall come in peaceably ) and his mother, on his behalf, obtained the kingdom by flatteries from a weakened old Augustus on behalf of Tiberius.

And with the arms of a flood shall they be overflown from before him, and shall be broken;

Tiberius was a vile person and died in a vile manner. In 37AD he fell into a coma and appeared dead or dying. Preparation was made for a successor, but he recovered from his coma. His aides solved the problem. They suffocated him with a pillow. So the prophecy was fulfilled.

yea, also the prince of the covenant.  The also means the prince of the covenant will be broken as well.
It was during the reign of Tiberius that Jesus ( the prince of the covenant ) was crucified.

We have progressed in the chapter to the point at the end of the 70 week prophecy of Daniel 8-9
Up to now the chapter has been detailing the prophecy of the literal Jews from the time of Darius the Mede to the desolation of the Jewish sanctuary and their rejection by God. It now steps out of the finer detail and zooms out a little to cover the picture of the Roman domination (empirical and papal) of His flock to the end of time. It starts this picture at the point where Rome began it's influence on God's people.

And after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully:

Rome made a league with the Jews in 161BC at the request of the Jews.
The Romans were great politicians and a lot of their conquests were achieved by political maneuvering rather than military might. I am surprised that the bible would refer to politicians as deceitful??

for he shall come up, and shall become strong with a small people.
Romulus, founder of Rome and brother Remus
There originally were 2 brothers, Romulus and Remus, who started 2 cities. Romulus killed his brother and formed Rome. From that small people grew the Roman empire. Folklore says that they were orphans raised by a wolf.

He shall enter peaceably even upon the fattest places of the province;

A lot of Rome's conquests were political takeovers, without bloodshed.

and he shall do that which his fathers have not done, nor his fathers' fathers; he shall scatter among them the prey, and spoil, and riches:  Rome shared the wealth amongst the provinces that it took over, and protected them from outsiders. It was run as a republic rather than a kingdom.

yea, and he shall forecast his devices against the strong holds, even for a time.  Here we have a symbolic piece of prophecy which indicates how long this power would last in it's current form.
The term for a time refers to a symbolic period used in Bible prophecy. Remember we saw this term in the prophecies of Daniel 7 and Revelation 12.
A time is symbolic for a year. Daniel 4:16,23,25,32; and also a day in symbolic prophecy represents a year in literal time, Ezekiel 4:6; Numbers 14:34 and a year in the Jewish calendar was 360 days.
So the period shown here is one time which is one year of 360 symbolic days, making it 360 years in literal time.
As we have seen in other prophecies, to see where a prophecy is pointing, we need a start point and a time period.
We have the event pointed to:- the end of this form of the current king of the north.
We also have a time period:- 360 years
and the next verse or two will provide the start point.

And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army;

I am going to assume for a moment that we have already handled verses 26 & 27 which will prove what I am saying here.
The he here is Caesar Augustus who stirred up war against Mark Antony and Cleopatra in Egypt. He did this because Mark Antony went to Egypt on government business and fell in love with Cleopatra. This was a big issue to Augustus because Antony was married to the sister of Augustus Caesar, Octavia. Mark Antony divorced Octavia so he could have Cleopatra.

and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army;  The army of the king of the south was greater than that of Augustus, the king of the north. Mark Antony had his own military and also had the military of Cleopatra, so with 500 ships and 125000 soldiers outnmbered Augustus' 250 ships and 80000 soldiers.

but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him.  Mark Antony and Cleopatra should have won the battle of Actium convincingly, but the din of battle spooked Cleopatra and she retreated and fled back to Egypt with her 60 ships.
Mark Antony apparently thought she was more important than the fight he was waging against Augustus, so he went after her. His military was so disgusted, they defected to Augustus, who welcomed them.
The rest is history. When Mark Antony realised his men had defected, he fell on his sword. Cleopatra then attempted suicide by closing herself inside a burning building, but she was rescued and placed under house arrest by the Romans. She had a poisonous snake smuggled in within a basket of food and finished the job. There are some sources that say she was executed, and did not commit suicide.

Yea, they that feed of the portion of his meat shall destroy him, and his army shall overflow: and many shall fall down slain.

It was Mark Antony's own men that defected that were the prime reason he committed suicide.

The Battle of Actium on 2nd September 31BC involved the forces of Augustus Caesar against the combined forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra.

And both these kings' hearts shall be to do mischief,

Caesar Augustus and Mark Antony sat down together, having made a pact along with another Roman named Lepidus, to avenge Julius Caesar on the heads of the senators involved in his assassination. At the same time, they were each deceiving the other, as each was making plans to be the Roman leader, because neither wanted to share the kingdom. Cleopatra was also offering the co-operation of Egypt in the revenge action.

and they shall speak lies at one table;  They were lying to each other and also lying to others about their plans of retribution. The art of being a politician was developing.

but it shall not prosper:  But Rome had it's days numbered in the prophecy of verse 24 even for a time

for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.  What time appointed? Oh yes, this is referring to the time prophecy in verse 24. The kingdom would end 360 years after the battle of Actium.

Then shall he return into his land with great riches;

Having beaten Cleopatra, queen of Egypt, Augustus took the great wealth that she had accumulated and returned to Rome. Cleopatra, was at that time, and probably still by today's standards, the richest woman in the world.
No doubt, he even took the riches of Mark Antony as well.

and his heart shall be against the holy covenant; and he shall do exploits,  Even at this stage, Augustus was planning how he was going to use his power, not only against Judea, but all the Roman territories.
Although Rome had a treaty with Judea, it still trampled on the Holy Land, even after the death of Augustus.
It was Rome that crucified Jesus.
It was Rome that tore down the temple and destroyed Jerusalem in 70AD.
It was Rome that persecuted the early Christians.
It was Rome that used them as human torches.
It was Rome that fed them to the Lions.
It was Rome that pressured Christians to bow to false gods.
It was Rome that passed the first law forbidding " judaising " on the true sabbath.

and return to his own land.  After his defeat of Antony and Cleopatra, he returned triumphant to Rome.

At the time appointed

At the time appointed refers to the time period mentioned to in verse 24, the 360 years. That time has now come.

he shall return, and come toward the south;  Notice it says come toward the south , and not "to the south".
At this point in time 330AD, exactly 360 years after the prophecy started, Rome closed up shop and moved the headquarters of the empire SOUTH to Constantinople. This was the beginning of the decay of the Roman empire. When doing the maths here, remember that there is no year 0, so 360 years after 31BC is 330AD, not 329AD.

but it shall not be as the former,  It will not be in the power that it defeated Egypt under Mark Antony and Cleopatra in 31BC,

or as the latter.  or in the power in which it destroyed Jerusalem in 70AD.

For the ships of Chittim shall come against him:

This is the beginning of the downfall of Imperial Rome. The Vandals, led by Genseric, came through Carthage on the northern Mediterranean coast, starting the attack by the barbaric tribes, leading to the downfall of Rome in 476AD.
Josephus considered Cyprus, the original seat of the Chittim so the Chittim referred to here is the island that is now known as Cyprus and at one point, the Vandals sailed their ships from Chittim right into the Roman fleet and set them on fire. Almost every Roman ship was destroyed, severely weakening their naval strength.

therefore he shall be grieved,  The atrocities inflicted on Rome by the Vandals are the reason we use the term "Vandalism" today. Therefore, the phrase he shall be grieved was accurately predicted.

and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant:
Little horn
of Daniel 8
Here we see the "King of the North" transitioning from Imperial Rome to Papal Rome, just as it did in Daniel 7 and 8.
Remember, the "he" here refers to the king of the North, not DIRECTLY to any particular power. At this point the king of the north moves from Imperial Rome to Papal Rome in the same way the horn of Daniel 8 changed from horizontal to vertical.
The papacy shows indignation against the holy covenant

so shall he do; he shall even return,  the king of the north now returns from Constantinople (Imperial Rome) to the capital of Rome as the papacy.

and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant. And arms shall stand on his part,  Some have tried to say that this is Antiochus Epiphanes, but this does not make sense. It would throw out the whole sequence of Daniel 11 as he reigned BEFORE Julius Caesar came on the scene. Also, this power lines up with the little horn of Daniel 8. If it IS Antiochus Epiphanes, then it means that Daniel 8 refers to Greece as "very great", while Antiochus Epiphanes is seen as "exceedingly great". I don't think so. It would also mean that the greatest part of Daniel 11 is referring to a small time ruler of the Seleucid empire. I doubt that also.
We are now talking about the papal power as the king of the north. The papacy never had it's own military. It always used the military of the secular power to do it's dirty work.
At this point it used the military power of the Franks led by Clovis, and that of the Roman power led by Justinian.
The papacy used these military powers, along with others gained along the way, standing on his part to wipe out the Heruli, Vandals and Ostrogoths, which it claimed were arian heretics, but we only have the papal word for that. These are the "3 horns plucked up" of Daniel 7.
The last of these three tribes were wiped out in 538AD which began the 1260 years of papal supremacy.

and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice,  This is referring to the conversion to catholicism of the masses of pagans at the time. On one occasion, Constantine marched his army through the river and then told them they were now baptised Christians. I don't think so.
To prove this statement and cover this small piece of text properly would take a considerable amount of explanation that would add very little to the overall significance of Daniel 11. I have already covered this in great depth in the study on Daniel 8.
If you have done these studies sequentially, then you also would be aware of what this passage means. The main problem is that implied words have been assumed here by the translators not understanding what the passage was saying. Remember that Daniel was a sealed book until after most of these translations were done.

and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.  If you have done the study on The Mark of the Beast you will remember that the abomination that maketh desolate refers to the combination of church and state. This was first done when the papacy enlisted Clovis (the Franks) and later Justinian (Romans) to be the strong arm of the papal power.
This is an event we need to take note of. This union of church and state (abomination of desolation) was first set up with Clovis in 508AD. As we will see when we get into Daniel 12 this is the start of the 1290 days, so we shall re-visit this point.

And such as do wickedly against the covenant

The covenant of God is the 10 commandments. The papacy has removed the second commandment and changed the fourth commandment (3rd in catholocism because number 2 was removed) to refer to the first day of the week (Sunday) instead of the seventh day of the week (Saturday the Sabbath). These modified laws have been pushed down the throats of the so-called Christian world, and most willingly receive them, some even knowingly.

shall he corrupt by flatteries:  The papacy controls, not by force, but by coersion and promises of spiritual rewards and indulgences.

but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.  True Christians know the truth, "love not their lives unto death", and stand by the will of God whatever the threat.
Many groups, such as the Albigenses, Huguenots, Waldenses, stood firm and were persecuted and killed for their faith.
This is the period in Revelation 12 where the " woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, " Revelation 12:14 to be safe from the papacy.

And they that understand among the people shall instruct many:

These Christians hiding in the spiritual wilderness were great evangelists. They would memorise great sections of the Bible and/or have pieces of text sewn into their garments and witness to and teach the people in the towns and cities.

yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days.  For the entire dark ages, people of God were taken, robbed, tortured, and slaughtered because of their love for Him.

Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help:

This is the reformation looming into view. Men like Martin Luther, Calvin, Huss, Jerome.

but many shall cleave to them with flatteries.  Many will become "fair weather Christians", loving the promise, but not walking the walk. Paul referred to these as "having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof". 2 Timothy 3:5

And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white,

Many of God's people underwent severe trials, often resulting in death. The Bible says that these trials purge whiter than snow and make their garments white.

even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.  This was to continue until the time of the end which was in 1798 because it was for a time appointed . Several passages in Daniel 7:25, Revelation 11:2-3, Revelation 12:6, Revelation 13:5 show this pointer to the time of the end.

And the king shall do according to his will;

The papacy, up until the deadly wound described in  Revelation 13:3 set itself over all the kings of Europe and did anything it wanted to, including many atrocities.

and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god,  We have seen this before in Daniel 8:11 where he magnified himself even to the prince of the host . The papacy sets itself above even God Himself. He claims to be "God on earth". 2 Thessalonians 2:3,4

and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods,  Blasphemy has been strongly linked to the papacy. See Revelation 17:3 Revelation 13:1 Revelation 13:5,6

and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.  The " indignation " is God's indignation against the papal persecution of His saints. This continued until 1798 and the judgment for it began in 1844. Daniel 8:19

Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers,

The early Christians, prior to the papacy, held the love of God high. The papacy counted himself above God.

nor the desire of women,  The papacy does not allow the desire of women amongst the clergy. They are to be celibate. Paul refers to this also in 1 Timothy 4:1-3 Notice that he refers to the practice of forbidding to marry as a "doctrine of devils"?

nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.  We have covered this. The papacy considers itself above the true God as well as other pagan gods.

But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces:
The KJV has made one of it's very few errors here. The original Hebrew did not capitalize God, but noted it as god, making it quite different in it's meaning.

The papacy operates different to the Christian religion in that it uses force to compel conscience.
True Christianity follows the words of Jesus, while catholicism uses force and persecution.

and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
The papacy was symbolised in Revelation 17 as a harlot decked in gold, silver and precious stones. Revelation 17:3-6 This is not the God that the early Christians followed. In fact, the quoted piece from Revelation 17 also shows that the god the papacy followed was so far different that it had to use force, torture and murder to force it's dogma on true Christians.

Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god,

The papacy has turned Mary into a god and a mediator between heaven and man. They have also introduced praying to the dead. They have claimed that priests can forgive sins. None of these are recognised by the TRUE God.
There are only three in heaven that constitute God. The father, the Son, the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19
There is only ONE mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus 1 Timothy 2:5
Apart from being a sin to pray to the dead, it is useless, they know nothing. Ecclesiastes 9:5
It is GOD who forgives sins, not some lowly priest. Matthew 6:14

whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory:
Saints embellished with jewellry
Mary has been honoured with millions and millions of dollars worth of jewellry and precious stones. Many dead saints have also been embellished with massive treasures in gold, silver and jewellry.

and he shall cause them to rule over many,  The catholic church has oppressed many millions of people with their superstition and vain beliefs.

and shall divide the land for gain.  The papacy has long claimed the privilege of having the right to divide the world among the nations. It even claimed the right to divide the "New World" between Spain and Portugal in the 15th century. This has always been to line it's pockets. For a price, the catholic church has sided with dictators, mafia, and all sorts to fill it's coffers.

And at the time of the end

Now we have reached the time of the end which we have already found began in 1798. This is the end of the 1260 years that were allotted to the time of the gentiles. Revelation 11:1-3

shall the king of the south push at him:  The last time we had a reference to the king of the south was when Egypt under Mark Antony and Cleopatra were totally defeated and completely ransacked by Caesar Augustus in 30BC. This is not a literal king of the south, just as we are not referring to a literal king of the north.
The king of the north is now spiritual/symbolic after Jerusalem was left unto you desolate , and the king of the south is no longer physical Egypt from the same time point.
The king of the south is the symbolic counterpart of Egypt. The Bible refers to this counterpart in Revelation 11:8 as licentious secular athiesm. This stems back to the time the pharaoh of Egypt said Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, Exodus 5:2 Of all the ancient nations, Egypt was the one that most vehemently denied the existence of God. In our time, it is secular athiesm that most vehemently denies the existence of God.
We see here in Daniel 11:40 a reference to the deadly wound mentioned in Daniel 7, and is none other than General Berthier, at the order of Napoleon, taking the pope captive and imprisoning him, ending the 1260 years of papal suppression. The pope, pope Pius VI died a year later in captivity.
The word push here is used in the Hebrew as naggagh which means to gore or to war against.
The French revolution really brought athiesm to life as it had never been before, the bible referring to it as the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit Revelation 11:7 , and says it will make war against the Old and New Testaments. Communism has accepted athiesm as one of it's core principles and has continued the push against the king of the north (catholic version of Christianity), and the Berlin Wall, erected in 1961, was a symbol dividing papal controlled western Europe and communist controlled eastern Europe. This is one of the reasons that pope John Paul II co-operated with President Ronald Reagan to bring down the wall.

We have reached the point in this prophecy that signifies the time we are living in.
This pushing by secular athiesm (the king of the south) is still in progress. Even now, there is a strong push for a "liberal" or "permissive" agenda that seems hell bent on destroying every fibre of religion. The 10 commandments and prayer have been removed from schools. Evolution is rammed down the throats of children studying. There is an attempt to totally remove any sign or evidence that there is a God. This hatred of God has been fuelled by a kneejerk reaction to the cruel and dogmatic teachings of catholicism (the king of the north).
This push , the first part of verse 40, will continue until the second part of verse 40 is fulfilled. That is right. We are living in the middle of verse 40.

** The Future **

REMEMBER--- Everything up to this point was penned long before it happened. We now see it as history, but it was prophecy when it was written.
If what we have seen come to fruition is so accurate, do you think we can rely on the rest of the prophecy?
You can take it to the bank.

We continue with the second part of Daniel 11:40
and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind,  The papacy is going to get it's power back. The Bible says that the deadly wound will be healed. Revelation 13:3
A whirlwind is symbolic of a frenzied attack. Isaiah 5:28
Once the papacy gets it's power back, it will go after the king of the south (secularism) with a vengeance.

with chariots, and with horsemen,  Chariots and horsemen are symbolic of military strength 2 Kings 6:15 Exodus 14:18 Deuteronomy 11:4 2 Samuel 10:18 When Elisha died, Joash the king recognised him as the power and might of Israel by referring to him as the chariot and horsemen of Israel 2 Kings 13:14
The papacy is going to use the military might of the second beast of Revelation, the one that came from the earth, The United States of America. Eventually the USA will enforce the mark of the beast on behalf of the papacy.

and with many ships;
Ships are symbolic of riches and trade. Revelation 18:17 Psalms 107:23 Proverbs 31:14 2 Chronicles 9:21
The papacy will control the major commercial systems of the world. This will allow her to prohibit those who will not bend the knee to her from buying and selling. Revelation 13:17
The papacy also uses the promise and fulfillment of these riches to control these organisations. So much so that they lament when the papacy is finally destroyed. Revelation 18:11,15,16

and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.  The word overflow here is the word shataph which means to conquer.
The papacy will gain control over all flesh.
Revelation says that the whole world will follow the beast. Revelation 13:3
The papacy will gain total control over the governments of the whole world, just as it did in the dark ages.
Until a few decades ago, the fulfillment of Revelation 13, making a USA image to the beast seemed impossible, because to make this image, the USA would have to be the sole superpower. The USSR, China and others stood in the way. With the papacy and the USA working as a coalation in secrecy, the USSR was brought to a collapse in 1991. Now China is starting to look feeble. North Korea has reached a point where it is of little concern to these plans. The papacy is getting ready to spread it's tentacles over the world to return us to the dark ages.

Unfortunately for them, God is in control.

He shall enter also into the glorious land,

The glorious land represents literal Judea, where God's people are to be found. However, that ended at the cross. Jesus Himself said your house is left to you desolate Matthew 23:38-39 thus terminating the Jews as representing God's people. Paul made the distinction between literal Jews and spiritual Jews. Romans 2:28-29 Galatians 3:27-29
After the cross, the following symbolic changes occurred.
PhysicalbecomesSpiritual
King of the northThe papacy
King of the southAthiestic Secularism
IsraelGod's people
JerusalemGod's remnant people
Glorious landGod's people
Glorious Holy MountainGod's remnant people
BabylonThose against God's people
The dragonsatan and satanic religions
Paganism
So, the glorious land used here represents spiritual Israel, true Christians (as opposed to nominal Christians). Just as literal Israel was "caught in the middle" between the physical king of the north and the physical king of the south, so too today is spiritual Israel caught in the middle of the war between the spiritual king of the north and the spiritual king of the south.

and many countries shall be overthrown:
The word countries was supplied by the translators.
Remember Daniel was a closed book, so the meaning of the passage was unknown.
He shall enter into the glorious land and many shall be overthrown.
He will enter into the Christian churches and many will be shaken out. This is referring to the great shaking that will occur. Those who do not have a firm foundation in the faith will be overcome by satan and shaken out. Rome wants to re-unite all the churches, but on it's own terms, the terms put forward by satan.

but these shall escape out of his hand,  With the exception of those shaken out of the faithful churches, large numbers of these will not be influenced to turn from God and will escape from receiving the mark of the beast.

even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.  The Edomites, Moabites and Ammonites are all extinct, so who is this referring to? It is obviously symbolic.
These are those that "Come out of her, my people". Revelation 18:4
Edomites were the descendants of Esau, so they were cousins of the Israelites. In their spiritual form they represent religions close to the true Christian churches. The book of Amos says they will be called out in the last days (referring to their spiritual counterpart). Amos 9:11-12
Moab and Ammon were the sons of Lot, so again, were closely related to the literal Israelites, but more distant than the Edomites. In their spiritual form they are people that are aware of the Christian message but not intimate with it. Many of these will be turned to the true God when the loud cry goes out. Many will "come out" of their non-Christian lifestyles and accept Jesus at the midnight hour.
Isaiah 11:10-14 describes this same event. It mentions people from Judah, Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, Ephraim, Philistine, Edom, Moab, Ammon and the islands of the sea. It is saying " all walks of life ". All these groups will obey God's remnant. It does not mean "obey" in the normal sense. These people will get the sabbath message from God's remnant and follow it.
The chapter finishes by saying there will be an highway for the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt. This is talking about God's people being taken out of this earth in the same manner He took them from the hands of Pharaoh out of the land of Egypt.

He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries:

The whole world will follow the beast

and the land of Egypt shall not escape.  Spiritual Egypt, secular athiesm, will receive the mark of the beast in the hand.

But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver,

The papacy has and will have control over the economics of the world and not only have the power to reward those who do her bidding, but deny the power to buy and sell, something that will be enforced for those not receiving the mark of the beast.

and over all the precious things of Egypt:  The papacy will control the purse strings of the whole world including the secular powers.

and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.  This one needs a little bit of explanation, but it's meaning is clear.
When the literal king of the north invaded the literal Egypt, Libya was to the west of Egypt and Ethopia was to the south. These two nations were allies of Egypt and were a source of "firepower" when Egypt was under attack. Jeremiah makes reference to this alliance in Jeremiah 46:8-9.
Ezekiel also makes note of this unholy alliance of heathen Ezekiel 30:3-10. It is well worth reading this passage because it really details the parallel that will happen at the end of time. Verse 10 also describes how God will use spiritual Babylon just as He used literal Babylon to crush literal Egypt. When the king of the north invaded Egypt, these two nations were at his steps at the side door and the back door. When Egypt was occupied by an invader, the Libyans and Ethopians were right there at his steps.
Spiritual Egypt, secular athiesm, is close in principle with those that are also against the Christian religion of any sort such as the communist, Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu countries etc. When these see the overpowering force of catholicism allied with the image to the beast and it's military might they will align with the papal king of the north because they are right at his steps.
When the alliance of two under the control of the spirits like frogs, (the false prophet and the beast) confronts the third (paganism), then that group will form the third in the alliance. Revelation 16:13

But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him:

The papacy receives news that interferes with his agenda of forcing the mark of the beast on the whole world. We have already seen in the study of the mark of the beast that it is the enforcement of sunday law and the seal of God is the acceptance of God's law, including the seventh day sabbath, above the commandments of men.
In Revelation 7:2-3 we see an angel coming from the east with the seal of God.
God's throne is considered symbolically as north. This is why satan wants to set HIS throne in the north, to usurp God Himself. Isaiah 14:12-14 The Psalmist says that the throne of God is in the north. Psalm 48:2
This news that upsets the papacy so much is coming from God Himself in the symbolic north via an angel arriving from the east. This is what is known as The Loud Cry. It is the last great message that will go to the world fired by the final outpouring of the Holy Spirit, known as the "Latter Rain". many will hear and respond to this message, and this is what upsets the king of the north.

therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many.  This news really gets up the nose of the papal power. He then manipulates his puppet power, the image to the beast, the USA, to issue the death decree so that all who will not receive the mark of the beast should be killed. Revelation 13:15 This is the event referred to in Revelation as the dragon was wroth with the woman and went to make war with the remnant of her seed. Revelation 12:17.

And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace

This is a very interesting and informative statement. The word tabernacles represents a religious place, but the word palace represents a political headquarters. What we are seeing here is a combination of church and state. This is exactly what the mark of the beast is all about. The papal power is a combination of church and state.

between the seas in the glorious holy mountain;  The word in is an incorrect translation. It should read and .
Seas are symbolic of masses of people, and the papacy is going to create a divide between the masses of people that have the mark of the beast and the little band known as the remnant. The division is simple. On one side there are those, the majority, that have the mark of the beast and on the other there is the remnant that have the seal of God.

yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.
The next verse (Daniel 12:1) will explain how he will come to his end, but be assured that while he is being destroyed, no one will come to his aid. Revelation 18 tells this story in detail. Revelation 18:10,15,17

And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people:  At that time when the papal powers put forward the death decree Michael shall stand up for His people.
This is bad news for the papacy and the image to the beast. They had passed a death decree on the heads of those who have been faithfully rejecting the mark of the beast.
So, who is Michael? Well, this is a study in itself. Most believe that Michael is the head of the angels. That is true, and for the sake of Daniel 11, that is true enough, but it would be nice to put a face to a name, so to speak.
Let's look at some meanings. Michael means "who is like God". Angel means "messenger".
Gabriel referred to Michael as "your Prince", Daniel 10:21 not as another angel. Lucifer was the most powerful angel in heaven before he turned bad, but he was below Michael. So, WHO is Michael?
By what we have seen, One who is like God (Michael) is a Messenger who is above the most powerful angels we know about (Gabriel and Lucifer/satan) and can only be one person...Jesus. Michael is the pre-incarnate form of Jesus before He stepped down into human form.
There are some who are now saying "JESUS AN ANGEL - NO WAY!"
Jesus is the DOOR John 10:9 but He is is NOT made of wood.
Jesus is the LAMB John 1:29 but he is not a sheep.
Jesus is a LION Revelation 5:5 but He is definately not a cat.
Jesus is THE WORD John 1:1 but He will not be found in a dictionary.
Jesus is the ARCHANGEL meaning He is head over the angels, but He is not an angel.
Jesus is Michael.
Jesus has watched spiritual Babylon forming and squeezing and threatening God's faithful followers. Now that they have passed a death decree He says "Enough is enough".
He then utters those terrifying words: He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. Revelation 22:11

and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time:  Probation has now closed. The seven last plagues begin to fall. The end is near. There never has, and never will be, a time of trouble like this one. These plagues are horrific and terrifying. They could have been avoided by accepting the One that can save. Praying to Mary will not save anyone. Nor will praying to a myriad of dead saints.
The prophet Jeremiah describes the intensity of this time of trouble as horrific. Jeremiah 30:5-7
These plagues will fall on those who have willingly accepted the mark of the beast. They will not affect God's faithful in even the slightest way. Psalm 91:7-12
The impenitent have placed a death decree on the apple of God's eye and now Michael has stood up to intervene and the death decree will fall on the heads of the originators of the decree. The seven last plagues are going to be the absolute worst period of trouble the world has ever seen, and that would include the flood in Noah's day.

and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.  Those in the grave and those still living who have faithfully waited on the Lord, and have their names in the Book of Life will be rescued and taken to heaven. Those not in the Book of Life will be slain.
This book is mentioned in Daniel 7:10 when it said the judgment was set and the books were opened.
The apostle Paul draws a dramatic picture of this event. 2 Thessalonians 4:16-17

And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.  Not ALL will be resurrected at this point. The righteous will be brought up to be taken to heaven to everlasting life. A small number of the wicked will be brought up at this time to experience the second coming. Jesus mentioned this when he told Caiphas that he would see the second coming. Matthew 26:63-64. Those that had a part in the crucifiction of Jesus will see Him come. Revelation 1:7. I think this extends past those that had a hand in the literal crucifiction to some that have spiritually crucified Jesus and His martyrs over the years. I would not be surprised to see some like Pharaoh be given a ringside seat.

And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.  This is a parallel verse to Revelation 18:1 telling of the angel lighting the whole world with his glory.
Those in the glorious holy mountain are considered wise and are tasked with spreading the sabbath truth and with the help of the latter rain (the final outpouring of the Holy Spirit) will turn many to righteousness for eternity.

But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.  Daniel has been told that this is a sealed book and would not be able to be understood till the time of the end.
This is why the book of Daniel has never been "cracked" until recently. I feel that chapters 11 and 12 are the last to be unsealed. They seem so easy to understand now, but they have confused many scholars for a long time.
The many shall run to and fro is written in the context of running back and forth through a scroll. The Bible was originally written on scrolls, not in page form as it is today.
This verse is saying that many would search the scriptures in vain for a meaning of this book until the appointed time (the time of the end), and finally knowledge would be increased, and it would be understood.

Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river.  Daniel, in vision, is seeing two beings standing on either side of the river. These are the same two he saw at the beginning of the vision in chapter 10. These two were Michael (Christ) and Gabriel.

And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river,  Gabriel is speaking to Michael.

How long shall it be to the end of these wonders?  Gabriel is enquiring about the time period of this vision.

And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever  This is Jesus (Michael) making an oath about the vision. Jesus can never lie, so if He makes an oath about something then that something is very important and guaranteed to take place. Jesus, being God, is the one that liveth for ever so he is swearing by Himself.

that it shall be for a time, times, and an half;  This is the 1260 days or 42 months we have seen so many times before. Jesus is declaring that the time of the end will begin in 1798 (the end of the 1260 years).

and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.  God's people are dispersed and scattered throughout the entire community of the world. It is their task to spread His message with them. At the time of the end the harvest begins and He transitions from a scattering to a gathering.
Caiaphas unknowingly referred to this when he discussed the plot against Jesus. John 11:51-52
Jesus Himself mentioned this principle when He said He that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad. Matthew 12:30
He is guaranteeing that the scattering of His people will end in 1798 and then the gathering will begin. Isaiah 11:10-14

And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things?  Poor old Daniel is confused. He needs more explanation.

And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.  He reminded Daniel that the understanding of the book was sealed till the time of the end.
That included Daniel.

Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly:  The mark of the beast will polarize the two groups. The righteous and the wicked, or as they are also known "The wheat and the tares" or "The sheep and the goats".

and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.  This goes back to the words of Jesus, the wise man builds on the Rock and the fool builds on the sand. Jesus is that Rock.
The wise are those that accept the final warning message. The wicked do not want to know so do not accept the truth. God does not want THREE groups, just two, righteous and wicked, so He allows them to believe satan's lies simply because they do NOT want to believe the truth. 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12

And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.  As we have seen many times before in our studies, the 1290 days of symbolic time translates to 1290 years of literal time. Ezekiel 4:6 Numbers 14:34 When we looked at Daniel 11:31 we saw that Clovis, the king of the Franks, was converted from paganism to catholicism. He then gave his power to the papacy, and wiped out the remaining pagan powers in Europe. I told you we would come back to that for the sake of the 1290 days.
This event in 508AD was the first setting up of the abomination of desolation, the union of church and state, setting the start for the 1290 days (years).

Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.  This time period has the same start point as the 1290 days in the previous verse, but a different start point to the 1260 days in Daniel 8. This is because, although describing the same historical events, are different prophecies.
The 1335 days (years) reaches from the original setting up of the abomination of desolation to 1843.
Daniel is told that a special blessing is placed on those that are alive in or after 1843. There were a group of people waiting for the return of Jesus in 1843, because they were wise and were the first group of people to correctly interpret the meaning of the 2300 day prophecy. They were out by a year (probably forgot about the lack of a year 0), and they had the event wrong, but they were the first of what Daniel 11 & 12 call wise.
We can speculate, and many have, what that special blessing is, but the Bible has not told us so we will leave it there.

Let's quickly look at these time periods in table form

But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.  Daniel is given rest after documenting one of the greatest books ever written, The Book of Daniel.

Daniel 11 is the longest and most detailed prophecy in the whole Bible.
It begins prior to the 2300 day prophecy of Daniel 8 and continues long past 1844 where the 2300 day prophecy ended.
Daniel is one of the greatest books of the Bible, and chapter 11 is the greatest chapter in that book.
